Constituted 15 aug. 1917 as the 24th Engineers (Supply and Shop) Organized in Sept. as Companies F,D, & E, 26th Eng. transferred to the 24th Eng. in Nov; remainder of regiment organized new. Demoblized 3 June 1919 at Camp Jackson, South Carolina. Re constituted and consolidated 3 April 1931 with the 24th Eng.(General Service) (Constituted 1927) and designated 24th Engineers (General Services) Redesignated 16 December 1940 as 24th Engineer Battalion (Armored) Actived 15 April 1941 at Pine Camp, New york as an element of the 4th Armored Division. Redesignated 5 Jan 1942 as 24th Armored Engineer Battalion. (Company D Withdrawn from 4th AD 10 Sept. 1943, disbanded 10 Nov 1943; Company E redesignated 988th Treadway Bridge Company 10 Sept 1943) Inactivated 21 April 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersy Activated 15 June 1954 at Fort Hood, Texas Redesignated 1 april 1957 as 24th Engineer Battalion Inactivated 10 May 1971 in Furth, West Germany Note:The 24th Eng.,Bn.became the 16th eng., Bn. 1st Armored Div..In fact the entire 4th armored Division becane the 1st AD.
